Valence (or valency) of an element is a measure of its pairing power with other atoms whenever it forms chemical compounds or molecules.

Definitions:

The maximum number of univalent atoms (eg: hydrogen atoms or chlorine atoms) that may combine with an atom of the element.

Example Chemical compounds.
